Summary

This chapter discusses the findings of a research study on translation shifts and techniques used by students in translating a text from English to Bahasa Indonesia. The study found 105 level shifts, which occurred due to differences in grammatical equivalence between the two languages. Category shifts were also identified, including structure shifts (233 occurrences), class shifts (138 occurrences), unit shifts (126 occurrences), and intra-system shifts (91 occurrences). The study also examined the translation techniques used, including direct translation (literal translation, 293 occurrences) and oblique translation (transposition, 233 occurrences; modulation, 103 occurrences; and adaptation). The findings suggest a close relationship between shifts and techniques in translation, with each influencing the other.
