Summary

Researchers found that letters and their sounds are not perfectly arbitrary, exploring grapho-phonemic systematicity in multiple orthography systems, including Arabic, English, Greek, Hebrew, Korean, Shavian alphabet, Pitman's shorthand, Chinese, Aurebesh, and Klingon. They measured pairwise phonological distances between phonemes and corresponding pairwise orthographical distances between letters, finding significant grapho-phonemic systematicity in all conventional writing systems and two English shorthand systems. The study suggests that similar letter-shapes have similar canonical pronunciation, and that this systematicity may facilitate language learning and orthography acquisition.
