Summary

Amnesty International Australia has provided input into the Review of Australia’s Community Support Program for refugees, citing enormous goodwill across the country to welcome and support refugees. Nearly 40,000 Australians have signed a petition calling for an expanded and improved program, with dozens of communities submitting recommendations for a community-oriented and affordable model. Amnesty International has worked with governments and stakeholders in eight countries to establish community sponsorship programs and recommends an alternative model similar to Canada's, with key principles including: not taking places from others in need, limiting costs, providing adequate support and services, and allowing community, family, and businesses to act as sponsors. They propose the Australian community could support the sponsorship of around 10,000 refugees per annum and call for a fairer and more just community sponsorship program.
