Summary

Scientists should share data and models to allow free and open access, and publishers should embrace open access, according to the Royal Society's report "Science as an Open Enterprise: Open Data for Open Science". The UK government's working group, chaired by Janet Finch, recommends a "clear policy direction to support publication in open access or hybrid journals", and major funders believe making research datasets available will generate faster progress, better value, and higher quality science. The BMJ is partnering with the Dryad online repository to make it easy for authors to share their anonymised data, and is introducing article processing fees for all published research articles, with fee waivers and discounts available for authors who are unable to pay.
