Summary

PFASs are toxic to human health, and 14.26% of European teenagers exceed the internal serum level of 6.9 µg/L, with highest median values in Northern and Western Europe. Exposure to PFASs is mainly through food and contaminated drinking water, with diet being an important exposure determinant. Higher serum levels of PFNA and PFOS are associated with consumption of fish, seafood, eggs, and offal. PFASs can be found in consumer products, contaminated drinking water, and food, and can enter the body through dermal absorption, ingestion, and inhalation, affecting reproduction, fertility, thyroid function, and increasing the risk of kidney and testicular cancer.
