Summary

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are toxic pollutants that persist in the environment, accumulating to harmful levels for the environment, wildlife, and human health. India, a leading pesticide manufacturer in Asia, has high levels of POPs due to poor management of e-waste and municipal and industrial wastes. Despite being exempt from the DDT ban under the Stockholm Convention, India has been allowed to produce and use DDT for vector-borne disease control. Poor management of waste PCBs and OCPs has contributed to high levels of toxic chemicals in local environments, affecting health and the environment. POPs can cause health problems such as cancer, birth defects, and reproductive disorders, and safe management is key to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 12. India has signed international treaties and enacted provisions to control chemical contamination, but a strong national framework is needed for sustainable consumption and production.
