Summary

Public Law 97-28 designates the week beginning March 7, 1982, as "Women's History Week". The law acknowledges the significant contributions of American women to the nation's history, including their roles in founding the country, participating in the labor force, and leading social change movements. Despite these contributions, the law notes that women's roles have been consistently overlooked and undervalued in American history. The President is requested to issue a proclamation calling for observance of the week with appropriate ceremonies and activities. The law was passed by the Senate on March 10, 1981, and by the House on July 15, 1981, with Senate concurrence in House amendments on July 24, 1981. It was approved on August 4, 1981.
