Summary

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of priority health-risk behaviors among youths and young adults, including unintentional injuries and violence, sexual behaviors, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, unhealthy dietary behaviors, and physical inactivity. YRBSS data are obtained from national and state-level school-based surveys conducted biennially since 1991, with representative samples of students in grades 9-12. The system has undergone improvements, including increased coverage and technical assistance, and continues to evolve through questionnaire revisions, addition of new populations, and innovative data collection methods.
