The National Transgender Discrimination Survey found that 41% of transgender and gender non-conforming adults reported attempting suicide, vastly exceeding the 4.6% of the overall US population. Key findings include:
- 46% of trans men and 42% of trans women reported attempting suicide
- Younger respondents (18-24: 45%), multiracial (54%), and American Indian or Alaska Native (56%) had higher prevalence of suicide attempts
- Those with lower educational attainment (48-49%) and lower annual household income (less than $10,000: 54%) also had higher prevalence
- Respondents who experienced rejection, discrimination, victimization, or violence had elevated prevalence of suicide attempts, including those who experienced family rejection (57%), harassment or bullying at school (50-54%), and discrimination or harassment at work (50-59%)
- 65% of respondents with a mental health condition that substantially affects a major life activity reported attempting suicide
- Respondents who were HIV-positive (51%) and those with disabilities (55-65%) also had elevated prevalence of suicide attempts.
