Summary

Heterosexual contact is the most common HIV transmission method among women and the second most common among men, with 24% of new HIV diagnoses in the US in 2015 attributed to heterosexual contact. In Virginia, the average number of new HIV diagnoses due to heterosexual contact from 2011 to 2015 was 134 per year, with 72% of new HIV cases among women being Black, non-Hispanic. As of 2015, 4,781 people in Virginia were living with HIV due to heterosexual contact, with 73% being Black, non-Hispanic, and 52% having progressed to an AIDS-defining condition. Among heterosexuals, 64% had evidence of care, 52% were retained in care, and 49% were virally suppressed in 2015.
