Summary

Transmission of thin light beams through turbulent mixing layers is investigated to understand effects of large-scale coherent structures and mixing transition on optical quality. Experiments consider unequal and equal density cases, with large-scale Reynolds numbers ranging from 3500 to 80000. Light transmission characteristics are studied qualitatively and quantitatively, finding that spanwise coherent structures generate systematic deflections in the streamwise direction, while streamwise structures generate substantial deflections in the spanwise direction. Deflection angles increase rapidly during mixing transition, peaking at 380 high-speed-side momentum thicknesses downstream, then decrease to asymptotic values of 0.6 to 0.8.
