Summary

A retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in North Kerala, India, to identify the microbial profile and antibiotic susceptibility patterns in blood culture isolates. Out of 1196 blood samples, 113 (9.44%) were culture positive, with 60 (53.57%) being Gram-positive cocci and 53 (46.4%) being Gram-negative bacilli. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common Gram-positive isolate (67%), followed by coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (28%). Escherichia coli was the most common Gram-negative isolate (32.6%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (25%). The study found that 13 (32.5%) of Staphylococcus aureus isolates were MRSA, and 83.37% of Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were ESBL producers. All isolates were sensitive to Imipenem and Meropenem. The results highlight the importance of monitoring antibiotic resistance patterns to guide effective treatment of bloodstream infections.
