Summary

Patients with Thrombotic Microangiopathy (TMA) may present with signs and symptoms including fatigue, dyspnea, dark urine, back pain, jaundice, paleness, and resting tachycardia. TMAs are characterized by thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and organ dysfunction, affecting organs such as the brain, kidneys, heart, and lungs. Symptoms can include CNS symptoms, cardiac symptoms, GI symptoms, pulmonary symptoms, purpura, petechiae, and bleeding. TMA can manifest in the presence of clinical conditions such as pregnancy, malignant hypertension, and autoimmune disease. Evaluation of ADAMTS13 activity and Shiga toxin/EHEC test can help diagnose TMA, with severe ADAMTS13 deficiency indicating Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP).
