Summary

This study evaluated the effectiveness of various tests, including visual evoked potentials (VEPs), frequency-doubling perimetry (FDP), standard achromatic perimetry (SAP), contrast sensitivity (CS), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in detecting subclinical visual impairment in 11 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) who had no history of optic neuritis and no visual symptoms. The results showed that 77.1% of eyes had abnormal CS, 72.7% had abnormal MRI findings, 63.6% had abnormal SAP, 54.4% had abnormal VEPs, and 50% had abnormal FDP. Only 9.1% of eyes had no abnormality detected by any of the tests. The study concluded that a combination of tests is necessary to detect subclinical visual impairment in patients with MS, and that no single test can detect all abnormal eyes.
