A Peruvian monstrance from 1649 is housed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, previously believed to be Mexican. The silver gilt monstrance features applied enamels, a square base, and a large gloria surrounding a transparent case for the host. An inscription on the base reveals it was donated by Fray Pedro de Urraca, a revered religious figure in colonial Peru, to the parish church of Jadraque in Guadalajara, Spain, where he was baptized. The monstrance's style and ornamentation are consistent with those of silversmiths in Lima during the 17th century, and it is attributed to the city's silver workshops. A possible creator of the piece is Diego de Atiencia, a prominent silversmith in Lima, who may have shared origins with Fray Pedro de Urraca.
