Content of Selected Metals in Muscle of Cyprinid Fish Species from the Nitra River, Slovakia

This study analyzed the concentrations of seven heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd) in the muscle tissue of five common cyprinid fish species (gudgeon, European chub, barbel, roach, nase) collected from the Nitra River in Slovakia. Key findings include:

Exceedance of Safety Limits: The Slovak permissible limits for Cu, Ni, Pb, and Cd were exceeded by 100%, 12%, 6%, and 10% of analyzed samples, respectively.

Metal Accumulation Order: On average, the order of metal concentrations in fish muscle was: Zn > Cu > Fe > Mn > Ni > Pb > Cd.

Statistically Significant Differences: Statistically significant differences were found among species for manganese, copper, and cadmium concentrations (p<0.05 to p<0.001).

Comparative Analysis: Iron, manganese, and cadmium levels in the Nitra River fish align with or exceed those reported in other cyprinid fish species from different locations worldwide.

Conclusions: The results highlight the potential risk to human health posed by heavy metal contamination in the Nitra River ecosystem, emphasizing the need for further monitoring and management strategies.
