Summary

Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics study compares UV-RSS spectral measurements and TUV model runs for clear skies during the May 2003 ARM aerosol intensive observation period. The TUV radiative transfer model was used to calculate spectral irradiance between 300-360 nm. Measured and modeled spectral transmittances were compared for seven cases with low to moderate aerosol loads and solar-zenith angles. A procedure for retrieving single scattering albedo in the ultraviolet is outlined, based on comparisons of direct and diffuse transmittance. The study aims to assess the level of agreement between different methods for measuring aerosol optical properties and to test the sensitivity of the agreement to aerosol properties.
