Summary

An adaptive semi-Lagrangian advection model for transport of volcanic emissions in the atmosphere has been developed, extending an existing model to include sedimentation of volcanic ash. The model uses a precalculated wind field to drive the advection of volcanic emissions and has been evaluated using the explosive eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991. Simulations were able to reproduce the general advection of the Pinatubo ash cloud at high local resolution while minimizing computational cost. The best results were achieved with simulations using multiple ash particle sizes, and differences from observed data were attributed to uncertainties in input parameters and the impact of Typhoon Yunya. The model has the potential to improve ash dispersion forecast models by utilizing adaptive meshing to reduce computational costs.
