Summary

Extreme precipitation (EP) is a major driver of natural hazards in the Loess Plateau (LP) of China, but its spatiotemporal characteristics are poorly understood. A universal multifractal approach was used to assess EP over the LP from 1961 to 2015. The results show that EP thresholds range from 17.3 to 50.3 mm d−1, and the mean annual EP increases from 35 to 138 mm from the northwestern to the southeastern LP. EP frequency and intensity vary spatially, with the highest EP frequency occurring in the mid-southern and southeastern LP, and the strongest EP intensities in the central LP. The East Asian monsoon controls precipitation, with 72% of the total amount occurring from June to September, and 91% of EP events concentrated between June and August. The study finds that 91.4% of the LP has experienced a downward trend in precipitation, while 62.1% of the area has experienced upward trends in EP indices, indicating a potential risk of more serious hazardous situations.
