Summary

Phenology in US deciduous forests has changed over the past 30 years, with studies showing inconsistent results. This study constructs a database of ground measurements and uses it to calibrate and evaluate phenology models, finding that temperature change is the dominant driver of observed trends. The results show a significant advance of 0.34 day yr−1 for spring budburst in the east, a delay of 0.15 day yr−1 for autumn dormancy onset in the northeast and west, and no evidence of change elsewhere. The growing season in the 2000s is extended by about 1 week (3-4%) in the east, New England, and the upper Rocky Mountains forests.
