Summary

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a significant anthropogenic greenhouse gas, with a global warming potential 310 times higher than CO2. The main sources of N2O are nitriﬁcation and denitriﬁcation in soils, with approximately 20% originating in wet rainforest ecosystems like the Amazon. Aircraft vertical profiles of N2O were measured over two sites in the Eastern and Central Amazon, estimating regional N2O fluxes. The annual mean N2O flux upwind of the Cuieiras Biologic Reserve was 2.1±1.0 mg N2O m−2 day−1, higher than the 1.5±1.6 mg N2O m−2 day−1 upwind of the Tapajos National Forest. The higher rainfall around the Cuieiras site may explain the higher N2O emissions due to increased soil moisture. Seasonality was present for fluxes from the coast to the Tapajos site, with high fluxes during the wet season and a second peak during the dry season, possibly due to biomass burning. The average CO:N2O ratio suggests a larger biomass burning contribution to the global N2O budget than previously reported.
