Summary

A short-term in situ experiment was conducted in the Peru Basin to study the effects of crushed polymetallic nodule particles on abyssal meiobenthos communities. The results showed that 46% of the total meiobenthos occurred in the added crushed nodule layer after 11 days, with decreased abundances in the underlying sediment. The migratory response was particularly seen in polychaetes, copepods, nauplii, and nematodes. Nematode tissue copper burden did not show elevated copper toxicity, but feeding type proportions were altered in the added nodule material. The study indicates that burial with crushed nodule particles induces changes in the vertical structure of meiobenthos and nematode feeding type proportions within a short time frame.
