Summary

Satellite and model data were combined to examine relationships between aerosols and clouds, focusing on the first aerosol indirect effect. A strong negative relationship was found between sulphate and organic aerosols and cloud top effective radius for low clouds, indicating both aerosol types contribute to the first indirect effect globally. The effect of aerosols on cloud droplet size was more pronounced for larger cloud liquid water paths. While the CanAM4 model broadly reproduced the observed relationship between sulphate aerosols and cloud droplets, it did not capture the dependency on organic aerosol concentrations or cloud liquid water path, although a modified version of the model showed improved results.
