Summary

A method for measuring the δ2H and δ18O composition of pore waters in saturated and unsaturated geologic core samples using direct vapour equilibration and laser spectrometry (DVE–LS) has been improved. The DVE–LS method provides good comparative agreement and accuracy with water squeezed from the same core, and offers high-resolution depth profiles with greater spatial resolution than traditional methods. However, it is less effective for cores from saturated permeable media or those contaminated by drilling fluid. Accurate results can be obtained with core samples having gravimetric water contents > 5% by increasing the sample size, and sample storage in gas-sampling bags provides acceptable results for up to 10 days. The DVE–LS approach is a promising alternative for studying hydrogeology, but eliminating analytical interferences from volatile organics remains a challenge.
