Summary

Conventional subsoil irrigation techniques do not lower carbon emissions from drained peat meadows. A study in the Netherlands found that subsoil irrigation (SSI) systems, which aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by maintaining a higher groundwater table, did not significantly reduce CO2, CH4, or N2O emissions from drained peat meadows. The SSI system consisted of perforated pipes 70 cm below the surface, with a spacing of 5-6 m, and was compared to control sites with traditional ditch drainage. Despite higher groundwater tables at SSI sites, especially in summer, there was no significant difference in annual carbon emissions between SSI and control sites. The study suggests that SSI may not be an effective climate mitigation strategy for drained peatlands, and that future research should focus on manipulating groundwater tables in the uppermost organic layers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
