Summary

A regional model coupled with a chemistry component and a snow, ice, and aerosol radiative model is used to simulate black carbon (BC) and dust concentrations and their radiative forcing in seasonal snow over North China. The model performance is evaluated using extensive field measurements, and the results show that the model generally underestimates BC in clean regions but overestimates it in polluted regions. The simulated BC and dust introduce a similar magnitude of radiative warming in the snowpack, comparable to the surface radiative cooling due to BC and dust in the atmosphere. The study highlights the need for more observations, particularly concurrent measurements of atmospheric and snow aerosols and deposition fluxes, to improve the model's accuracy.
