Summary

A helicopter-borne probe provided measurements of aerosol particle properties, which were supported by ground-based lidar measurements. The results show that ground-based measurements of particle number size distribution (PNSD) and particle number concentration (PNC) are representative of the PBL when it is well mixed, but may not be representative during new particle formation events. The study also determined optical aerosol properties, such as particle light backscatter and extinction coefficients, and found good agreement between airborne and lidar measurements for particle light extinction coefficients, but significant differences for particle light backscatter coefficients. The lidar ratio, a critical parameter for aerosol remote sensing, was determined to be 30 sr for 1064 nm and 55 sr for 355 and 532 nm wavelengths.
