Summary

Seminole County Water Lake Management Program staff surveyed Bear Lake's aquatic plants from December 2009 to April 2010. The lake's submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) consists of native plants like muskgrass, road grass, southern naiad, stonewort, and eelgrass, as well as the invasive exotic hydrilla. Hydrilla was present in small quantities, competing with native SAV for space, and was observed to depths of 21 ft. The dominant emergent aquatic plant is the exotic invasive torpedo grass. Water hyacinth was also observed, particularly in the canal off Linneal Beach Drive. Secchi readings showed varying water clarity, with a maximum of 12.6 ft. The surveys also noted the impact of winter dieback on emergent aquatic plant populations and the condition of eelgrass, which was discolored, torn, and fragmented.
