Summary

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) were reassessed for carcinogenicity by 26 experts from 12 countries at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in February 2013. PCBs are persistent environmental pollutants that can cause cancer, and the general population is exposed mainly through food, particularly contaminated animal fats. The experts found sufficient evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of PCBs, particularly for melanoma, and limited evidence for non-Hodgkin lymphoma and breast cancer. Animal studies also showed that PCBs can induce tumors in various organs, including the liver, lung, and oral mucosa.
