Summary

Researchers used the ACE-FTS instrument to retrieve CO2 vertical profiles from space observations, achieving a vertical resolution of a few kilometers and an accuracy of about 2 ppm in the 5-25 km altitude range. They compared the results with in-situ aircraft measurements and simulations from two air transport models, finding that the ACE-FTS retrievals accurately reproduced key features of the CO2 altitude distribution, including seasonal cycle amplitude and vertical gradient. Small differences from model simulations were attributed to overestimation of model circulation strength during northern hemisphere spring. The study highlights the potential of occultation measurements to constrain surface carbon flux determination when combined with column measurements from nadir-viewing instruments.
