Summary

The antimicrobial activity of peracetic acid (PA) was compared to isopropyl alcohol and acetone against various bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Escherichia coli. PA showed the highest antimicrobial activity, with a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) range of 0.25-1%. In a time-kill assay, PA killed all test microorganisms within 15 seconds, except for vancomycin-resistant E. faecalis, which required 120 seconds. PA was also effective in disinfecting endodontic K-files contaminated with E. faecalis, completely killing the bacteria within 15 seconds. The study suggests that PA is a suitable agent for trans-operative disinfection of endodontic files during treatment.
