Summary

Numerous studies have shown that a significant fraction of urban aerosols are composed of organic compounds, mainly from automotive sources, with implications for human health. A project produced the first seasonal aerosol composition and emission database for Manchester, UK, analyzing data from six field campaigns between 2001-2007. Results showed that organic material is the largest component of the aerosol, with primary aliphatic material dominating the smallest sizes, and oxygenated secondary organic material important in the accumulation mode. Seasonal effects and long-range transport played a role in the size distribution and mass loading of organic nitrates and sulfates.
