Summary

U-Pb zircon geochronology of gneisses in the Betic Cordillera, Spain, reveals evidence of recycled Variscan crust during the Alpine orogeny. The gneisses have ages between 280-300 Ma, suggesting a single magmatic pulse, and resemble peraluminous granitic bodies from the Variscan Orogen. Zircons in host pelitic metasediments have older ages (336-2050 Ma), indicating recycling of Early Carboniferous granites and correlation with magmatism in the West African Craton and Peri-Gondwana European Variscan Orogen. The new data propose a revised chronostratigraphy of the Nevado-Filábride Complex, suggesting it may consist of Palaeozoic or older rocks, and indicate independent metamorphic and tectonic evolutions for the Nevado-Filábride and Alpujárride complexes.
