Summary

Scientists investigated storing excess heat energy in the Bavarian Malm aquifer through the High Temperature Aquifer Storage project. A research well was drilled to 495m, and a large-scale heat storage test was conducted, involving five injection pulses of hot water and four tracer pulses. The test achieved energy recovery above 35% and prevented carbonate precipitation by adding CO2 to the water. Recovery rates for tracers were above 60%, and the research well flowed freely at 20 L/s, causing significant mixing of injected water with formation waters.
