Summary

Contemporary and long-term erosion in the Kruger National Park, South Africa, was assessed to establish baseline values for natural erosion rates. The park, spared from agricultural practices, represents a pristine savanna environment. Reservoir deposits and hydrological modelling provided average minimum sediment yield rates for 30-80 years, while cosmogenic 10Be measurements in quartz sand samples gave long-term erosion rates for periods of hundreds of thousands of years. The study compares contemporary and long-term erosion rates based on data from over 10 reservoirs.
