Summary

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are an environmental problem due to rising atmospheric concentrations since the industrial revolution, and can be indirectly transferred to the atmosphere through groundwater discharge. This study monitored CO2, CH4, and N2O concentrations in groundwater bodies of the Walloon Region (Belgium) from 2014 to 2016, finding concentrations ranging from 1769 to 100519 ppm for CO2, 0 to 1064 nmol/L for CH4, and 1 to 37062 nmol/L for N2O. Groundwater was supersaturated in GHGs, suggesting a contribution to the atmospheric GHGs budget. N2O production was linked to denitrification and nitrification, favored by intermediate dissolved oxygen concentrations and nitrate availability, while CH4 production was limited by non-reducing redox conditions.
