Recently, scientists have found that horseshoe crab blood contains antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that can fight biofilms, which are responsible for 80% of bacterial infections in humans. These AMPs can prevent pathogens from latching onto surfaces, change surface properties, and disrupt biofilm growth. They have shown potential in fighting multiple types of pathogens, including Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

However, the extraction of horseshoe crab blood has been found to have a higher fatality rate than previously thought, with estimates ranging from 10-30%. To address this, scientists are developing alternative tests, such as recombinant factor C and the monocyte activation test (MAT), which do not require horseshoe crab blood. These alternatives aim to reduce the impact on horseshoe crab populations and preserve their habitats.
