Summary

Horseshoe crabs have four species, with three in Southeast Asia and one in North America. They spawn on beaches and their eggs are a vital food source for migratory shorebirds. The crabs' blood is used to produce Limulus Amoeboocyte Lysate (LAL), a diagnostic reagent worth over $100 million annually in North America. However, Southeast Asian populations are threatened by coastal development, overharvesting, and pollution. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed Asian horseshoe crabs as Data Deficient, but reports suggest dramatic declines. A new threat has emerged with the importation of Asian horseshoe crabs to the US for bait, which risks introducing invasive species and diseases. The Horseshoe Crab Specialist Group recommends stopping this practice until a risk analysis is completed. Conservation efforts are needed to protect spawning habitats and update the Red List status to control harvesting.
