Summary

Asian horseshoe crabs, a "living fossil" species, have been spotted in Chiayi, Taiwan, with 5 adults and 32 young crabs sighted. The species, dated back 200 million years, has been found in only two other locations in Taiwan: Kinmen and Penghu. Authorities are collaborating with researchers to protect the species and its habitat, and a netted area will be set up to allow the crabs to spawn and nurture their young. The protection of the crabs will also be promoted as a tourist attraction, following a successful release of 70,000 captive-bred crabs in Kinmen in 2006.
