Summary

Frequency response analysis (FRA) is used for condition assessment of transformer windings, but interpretation of results is challenging. This paper presents an improved numerical method using a 3D finite element model (FEM) to obtain a turn-based high frequency model of transformer windings, considering frequency-dependent effects of parameters. The model is validated with measurements for a healthy state and various levels of disk space variation (DSV) fault are implemented to facilitate precise fault simulation and ease objective interpretation of FRA.
