The PYROCO2 project is progressing towards demonstrating the scalability and economic viability of carbon capture and utilization (CCU) to produce climate-positive acetone out of industrial CO2 and green hydrogen. After 18 months, project partners have made significant progress, including improving microbial biocatalysts, assembling a pilot reactor for chemo-catalytic upgrading of acetone, and characterizing catalysts. The project is also focused on process integration, sustainability assessment, and exploitation, replication, communication, and dissemination of results. A preliminary cradle-to-gate LCA has been done to determine the environmental impact of the PYROCO2 process, and stakeholders have been identified for the bio-based carbon dioxide utilization (CCU) value chain. The project aims to develop a replication strategy methodology for facilitating the emergence of local CCU hubs in other regions in Europe.
