Summary

Mechanisms of exchange between the north-east Atlantic and west-European shelf seas include summer upwelling, prevailing westerly winds, poleward flow, meanders, eddies, and local exchanges, amounting to an estimated 2-3 m2/s per unit length of shelf. Tidal transports are larger but largely ineffective due to reversal every six hours, except in areas with large internal tides. Mixing controls the seasonal thermocline, affecting primary production and organic matter fluxes, with the shelf-sea "pump" effectively transferring CO2 from the atmosphere to the deep ocean. However, knowledge of biogeochemical fluxes is sparse, and more measurements, model validation, and estimates are needed.
