Kalij pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos) is a habitat indicator species native to South Asia, and its population in Pakistan is declining due to limited habitat. A study was conducted in Mirpur Division, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, to model the habitat suitability of kalij pheasant using MaxEnt software. The presence of kalij pheasant was recorded from 166 sites, with the maximum abundance at Gaian site (2.33/ha). The model showed an average Area Under the Curve value (AUC) of 0.802, indicating good model precision. Temperature was found to be the prime environmental variable contributing to the species' distribution. The results revealed that 406.03 km2 of the total 4388 km2 area was highly suitable for kalij pheasant. The study identified hotspots and potential habitats for the species, which can inform conservation efforts.
