Summary

Researchers investigated near-threshold H/D exchange in CD3CHO photodissociation, studying HCO and DCO spectroscopy, and using theoretical methods, including transition state theory (TST) and master equation calculations. They measured the H/D ratio by integrating the whole HCO or DCO LIF spectrum and found that the integrated absorption coefficient for HCO and DCO is the same. The fluorescence quantum yields for HCO and DCO were also found to be similar. The photofragment excitation spectra of HCO and DCO showed that at low photolysis energy, the HCO and DCO peaks are of similar intensity, but as the energy increases, the HCO peaks become dominant. The relative intensity of the peaks was used to obtain the H/D exchange ratios, with an estimated error of 30% in the absolute DCO:HCO population ratio.
