Summary

MPI is widely used for parallel programming, but its combination with shared-memory approaches like OpenMP poses interoperability challenges. The MPI 2.0 standard defines thread levels to indicate how MPI interacts with threads, but there is a lack of debugging tools for thread-level compliance. This work proposes a static analysis to verify the thread-level required by an MPI+OpenMP application, extending the PARCOACH GCC plugin. The analysis checks conformance with any MPI thread level, including MPI THREAD MULTIPLE, and provides code transformation to verify non-compliance at runtime. Experimental results on benchmarks and production applications demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach, which is designed to be complementary to existing dynamic debugging tools.
