Summary

Choosing the proper enclosure requires knowledge of the alternatives, considering factors such as acidity, buffering, and material quality. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard IT9.2-1991 provides specifications for enclosure formats, papers, plastics, adhesives, and printing inks. Paper enclosures can be neutral or buffered, with buffered paper containing an alkaline material to neutralize acids. However, the effect of buffered paper on photographic emulsions is being questioned, and neutral enclosures are recommended when in doubt. Plastic enclosures, such as polyester, polypropylene, or polyethylene, can be used, but polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is unacceptable due to its chemical instability. The Photographic Activity Test (PAT) can ensure the safety of materials for photographic storage. Handling photographic prints and negatives requires care, and lint-free gloves are recommended to prevent damage from oils and perspiration.
