To qualify for FBI employment, applicants must not have: non-U.S. citizenship, a felony conviction, a domestic violence conviction, violated the FBI Employment Drug Policy, defaulted on a student loan, failed an FBI urinalysis drug test, failed to register with the Selective Service System, engaged in acts to overthrow the U.S. government, failed to pay court-ordered child support, or failed to file income tax returns. The FBI Employment Drug Policy disqualifies candidates who have used marijuana within the past year, other illegal drugs within the past 10 years, misused prescription drugs within the past year, or abused prescription or legally obtained substances within the past three years. Candidates must also undergo an FBI background investigation, including a polygraph examination, drug test, and extensive interviews, to receive a Top Secret security clearance.
