Summary

The distribution of organic carbon content across the soil profile is crucial in assessing carbon stocks and sequestering capacity of soils. A study of 78 soil profiles in South Karelia found that organic carbon content decreases with depth, with mineral soils under forest having high carbon content at the surface but a sharp decrease with depth. Anthropogenically transformed soils form an arable horizon, preserving increased carbon content at greater depths. The distribution of organic carbon content in mineral soils is well described by an exponential model, while in peat soils it is more complex and determined by land use and organic layer thickness.
