Summary

Aerosol exposure and aerosol cooling of climate have complex interactions, with air pollution being a major environmental threat to human health, while aerosol particles can have a cooling effect on climate. Reducing aerosol emissions may increase global temperature, potentially having negative health effects. A case study on ship emissions found that the "total health effect" of aerosol emissions, including both exposure to particles and climate change consequences, could not be determined as positive or negative for human health on a short time scale. Reducing particulate air pollution may have win-win effects on health and climate in some cases, but may also shift health effects from particle exposure to climate change. Therefore, emission reduction measures must be coupled with climate change mitigation actions to achieve a full health benefit globally.
